Someone very special shared a song with me titled, "Don't Laugh at Me" by Mark Wills. If you love country music like I do, you might know it. The lyrics within this song really spoke to me. It goes hand and hand with my platform of "Bully Free Starts With Me". A lot of times I think people forget what others are going through, whether it is something going on at home, family, or with their friends. Sometimes teasing and joking can be seen as funny, but not to those who are being targeted. The first stanza of the song sings...

I'm a little boy with glasses The one they call the geek A little girl who never smiles 'Cause I've got braces on my teeth And I know how it feels To cry myself to sleep

I'm that kid on every playground Who's always chosen last A single teenage mother Tryin' to overcome my past You don't have to be my friend But is it too much to ask

Don't laugh at me Don't call me names Don't get your pleasure from my pain In God's eyes we're all the same Someday we'll all have perfect wings Don't laugh at me

A huge problem in elementary, junior high, and high school is that students are being teased. The teaser thinks it is funny because they are just joking. But the target it is way more. We can not help how we look, what we wear, how we are raised, etc. This should not be a reason for someone to be bullied or teased. One small statement for one can mean the world to the other. I love the line that says, "In God's eyes we're all the same, Someday we'll all have perfect wings". Yes, we are all made differently, look differently, and act differently but one day we will all be the same. So why should we put others down?

I'm the cripple on the corner You've passed me on the street And I wouldn't be out here beggin' If I had enough to eat And don't think I don't notice That our eyes never meet

I lost my wife and little boy when Someone crossed that yellow line The day we laid them in the ground Is the day I lost my mind And right now I'm down to holdin' This little cardboard sign, so

It does not matter the age of who are being bullied or teased. If you see someone on the street, we do not know how they got there or what they have went through yet they are still judged because of it. This part of the song above is a way different subject than the first, but it is still the same whenever they are being judged, called names, or being teased. The next part of the song is very popular on how kids are being bullied these days, and probably right at this very second in schools.

I'm fat, I'm thin, I'm short, I'm tall I'm deaf, I'm blind, hey, aren't we all

People are being called fat, think, short, tall, etc. This is all because of how they look. Everyone is made differently, but one day we will all be the same. I think that is something we all forget sometimes. It does not matter how someone looks they are beautiful and unique. They cannot be put down because of that. Most of bullying is most often by students by their looks (55%), body shape (37%), and race (16%). I hope after reading this and listening to the song we can decrease those percentages and stop bullying.
